Transfer box mounts

Post by Sj410red » Sat Sep 14, 2013 8:11 pm

Just had an hours tinkering as you do with a sj, ive been suffering far to long with a vibrating/rattling transfer lever so I decided to replace the 3 stock rubber mounts with poly 1s, but instead of buying a kit off eBay for £15 I used 1 half of a poly leaf spring bush and a long nut, bolt and spring washer which goes all the way through the bush. Once they are all tightened up they are bout 5mm less in depth from the stock mounts, can this be a problem? Had test drive, all seems ok and no rattles! anyone got any views on this? All comments welcome, thanks Richard.

Are you just running one rubber? All the kits have 3 rubbers so that the box mounts can move up and down. Using just one rubber won't allow much movement so I wouldn't recommend mounting it like that.

I know people who have ripped the tbox mounts off the chassis rail with the 3bush mounts under hard use as they restrict movement compared to stock ones so just using one bush is a bit of a gamble if you like to put your foot down

I'm using 1 poly bush approx 1 inch in height on each of the 3 mounts, like the eBay kit shows (3 bushes) but I'm not sure of thickness on those kits tho.

Can you link me to the kit you mean, most polybush mount kits use 3 bushes per mount.

One bush between the chassis and tbox mounts and then 1 each side, this is how each mount should be if using a bolt through method so that the tbox can still move in all directions.

Just one bush and a bolt and it only allows the mount to compress, not expand. when under load and the transfer box tries to lift on one side, if the mount can't expand then all the load is going to be going through the tbox and chassis mounts and could cause breakages.

I wouldn't waste my money on that kit it's a really bad design (good thing you didn't)

These are the kits that I was talking about, the design allows more movement http://bit.ly/192ZRNN

Personally I prefer standard mounts though.
