Engine bogs down, help please

Post by Richie » Fri Nov 08, 2013 2:43 pm

Its been about 8 months and ive finally finished the sj

The prob I have is when I hold the car around 3000rpm and push the throttle slightly the engine bogs down, it also does this in 4th and 5th on the road.

Ive got the su hif44 carb on it the only 2 things I could think of is it has a huge intake hole and a even bigger K&N on the end of it. Maybe its sucking in to much air or could it be the mixture? If so anyone know how to set them up? or any other ideas? Thx

sorry to ask but have you got the right spring and needle in to start with?

I would firstly check to make sure there is damper oil in there!

Is it on a 1300 or 1600? What needle and spring are you using?

I had the same problem when I had the wrong spring. Should be a yellow spring for a 1600 or a red spring for a 1300

Preferably SU damper oil... but you can use 3-in-1... or even clean engine oil (15-40 seems ok)

damper oil changes viscosity correctly with the carb temperature so it will work a bit better if you can get it

Its worth checking the spring, just unscrew the dashpot off the top of the carb, then remove a spring clip (i think) and the spring is in there... it should have a coloured paint marker near the end if it's the right spring :)

Ok now heading to work.
First thing I will do is check needle and spring type
Then fill up the damper with 10-40 semi (fairly sure its empty) should they use oil in there?
Then I will change the inline filter

Last thing I can think of is checkin the mixture screw. Anyone know how many turns it should be? Thx

Checked the spring and its yellow
Replaced the inline fuel filter
Toped up the oil in top of carb
Checked the mixture screw and it wad 5.5 turns out

Road tested and still splutters and bogs down when you do any thing more than quarter throttle. Any ideas guys? Im stuck. Thx
