what's this for?

Post by timwilks13 » Sat Nov 23, 2013 4:37 pm

You know the hole to the left hand side of the first cylinder inlet and beneath the dizzy, what's it for? It was full of oil so assuming it's just not used for anything on an sj? The inlet manifold gasket had been letting oil into the first cylinder which might explain my oil burning issue perhaps?

I think it's part of the emissions set-up.

I should add there are quite a few different layouts for the above diagram.
Differences on years and country specs.
So yours may well not have all the parts shown above.
I know mine hasn't.
I don't have an egr valve so that hole may well go nowhere on my inlet manifold or not have a hole at all :er:

Would have thought if its to do with emissions would have been on the exhaust side? Also should it have been full of oil?

yea, i had the same querie. in the end i decided it was part of an EGR system (exhaust gas recirculation) it was a system that was never fitted to carbureted models but they left the facilities for it in the head (which i found strange, as the carb engine would have come out before injection surely?)

but if you stick your finger down the inlet ports you should be able to feel some little jets that the recirculated exhaust gasses would have come out.

Yes its the passageway for the EGR. In some markets they had EGR on the carb engine.
