I'm Having A Nightmare

Post by Scouse Lee » Fri Dec 20, 2013 6:30 pm

Hey up guys, I've finally got round to making a start on putting my front axle back together after spending ages finding parts/waiting for them to come plus doing a thousand other things unrelated to the SJ.......anyway because I dismantled it a good while ago I'm having a bit trouble putting it back together, I've searched the internet from top to bottom for a walkthrough on rebuilding from the swivel seals to the freewheeling hubs but can't find one, ok I've found one for the hubs, one for the wheel bearings and a few other bits but nothing that takes you through the whole process. Of course I've got a Haynes manual but what an absolute waste of time that is, for instance it states that the torque specifications are in Ft-lbs (unless otherwise indicated) then says that the Front Wheel Bearing Nut is 96 to 132 in-lbs......so what is 96 in-lbs in Ft-lbs and why don't they just give it in Ft-lbs to begin with?

ok so I've googled convert in-lbs to foot-lbs and it says 96 in-lbs is 8 ft-lbs, does this sound right?

Spot on.

Imagine a 96 lbs weight one inch away from a pivot point on a bar.

To give the same torque at one foot away from that pivot you would only need 1/12 of that weight.

So 96 divided by 12 (inches in a foot for you youngsters) = 8 lbs

Cheers Ladaman, why don't they just say 8 lbs then?, seems crazy to me..........any idea where I can find a complete axle rebuild walkthrough?

You can download a service manual in the 'general troubleshooting' section of the forum ;)

No probs.

There is an exploded diagram here that may help.

I have to pop out for a couple of hours now, but assuming Darrell (or someone else) hasn't posted something by the time I get back. I think I might have the Suzuki manual that I can probably put up for you. It's far better than the Haynes one.
