vitara 1.6 8v vs Sj 1.3 engine

Post by keyring » Sun Dec 29, 2013 9:10 pm

I know there are threads on here already covering this, but I felt they didn't answer my questions (maybe not reading the right thread)
But the HG has went in my 410, and I can get either a 1.3 or the 8v vitara engine to replace it, however I'm not sure which direction to go in.

I know obviously the vitara engine with all a bit more power and torque, but is there any down sides with the 1.6 compared to the 1.3?
I know many people go to the 1.6 from the standard 1.3, which makes me think with the same amount of work required am I as well just going straight to the 1.6?

Thanks for any help or links to threads that will answer my question

Exactly the same effort to fit them.

No down sides to a 1.6 in my opinion. Still need a 413 gearbox. Easy to add a PAS pump to a 1.6. The 1.6 carb tends to be more reliable than the rubbish 1.3 carb.

Ideal! Exactly what I thought, also have to modify a few mounts too, don't I?

And was going to run the su carb I have on the 1.0 at the momwnt so that wouldn't be an issue :)

I'm also slightly confused with what I've read online regarding mounts :(
I have an 85/86 model, so does this mean a 1300 box will fit in with out modification to the gearbox cross member?

And then I assume I need to fabricate new engine mounts?
Will the 1.0 exhaust fit onto the 1.6?

Cheers

You will need to make engine mounts, a lot of people just cut the mounts out of a 1.3 chassis.

The SU off a 1.0 won't work properly on a 1.6. That will be a HIF 38, for the 1.3s and 1.6s you need a HIF44.

You will need a 1.6 or 1.3 exhaust manifold and down pipe to join into the 410 exhaust system. I think some custom pipework is required to make it fit properly.

With regard to the gearbox mount I'd need to see a photo im not sure what year they changed them. Sure Scottie will answer later.

I'll try get engine mounts sourced then :)

Just as well I mentioned the carb lol, is it worth getting an su for the vit engine? Or is standard reliable enough or good enough offroad?

I'll probably replace the whole system then, as it is leaking slightly at a couple of places further back, will a 1300 exhaust fit the car? Or does it have to be 410 exhaust up the to the down pipe? Just so I know how wide my options are while looking

Ahh :( I'd send a photo although I'm currently in Aberdeen to fly offshore today. Plan is to have everything ordered and sitting waiting for me getting back :)

Thanks for your help!

The standard carb will do. With the 1.6 you ideally need a custom manifold to run the SU as the adapters make the carb sit very high against the bonnet.

Missed manifolds aren't cheap so if the carb it comes with works then run that for now.

I would just get a 1.3 manifold and front section of exhaust and go from there with something a bit custom.

Some people have used the vitars manifold and front of the vitara exhaust but I found it fouled the chassis rail so it will probably depend how you get your engine mounted.

For ease of getting it all running first, that gives me an excuse just to run the 1.6 carb rather than get into getting adapters etc for the time being!

I'll do that with the exhaust then, sounds a bit easier :)

And as for working out where the new engine mounts have to be welded, I assume best way is to place the engine in attached to them, line it up, tac them, remove the engine and get them solid

Cheers,
Ciaran

Yeah. I would just get the gearbox in and lined up and work from there.

Ideal!
Would I be right in thinking the engine mounts between a 410 and a 413 are different? The reason I ask, if I have found conversion plates for the engine mount, would it be the same for a 413 to 1.6 8v as it would be 410 to 1.6 8v?

Cheers
