Excuse my ignorance,Steel wheel info and options please

Post by SteveR » Wed Jan 01, 2014 2:47 pm

hi all

1st, HAPPY NEW YEAR.

My sj has original 15 x 5.5 wheels. Does the 5.5 mean 5.5 inches wide ?
i live in Italy with my uk reg SJ, this year thinking of changing to Italian reg so have to be careful here and understand everything before changing anything if that makes sense.

To keep things simple at start must keep original 195 SR 15 tyres. This does mean 195 80 15 right?
I always thought 195 mm tyre width. 80 mm tyre height and 15 inch steel wheel diameter, but no, seems the 80 means 80% tyre height of stated 195 mm tyre width, is this correct.

So 195 mm tyre width, 80% of 195 ( 156 mm tyre height, this must be from the inner hidden tyre bead to outside edge ?) fitting 15 inch steel wheel. Is this correct ?
Why all this metric mixed with inches.

Please can someone tell me if all the above is correct.

Next step need to find second set of steels.
What other steel wheels fit to standard everything 86 410 SJ.

all SJ steels ? over here difficult to find at cheap price.
vitara 15 inch steels ? are they all 5.5 inches wide and ok with 195/80/15 tyres?
Jimny 15 inch steels ?
Freelander 15 inch steels?
Daihatsu 15 inch steels?
Any others to look out for.
All of the above must be good for 195/80/15 tyres.
The offset is the position of tyre in relation to the wheel hub surface ?, are all the above ok with this and which/where are the numbers for this to check, how far different can it be?

For the future is it then possible to put a little bit bigger tyres on 15 inch 5.5 wide rims, how the hell am I supposed to work out all the off road tyres sized in inches for everything.

all help appreciated
Steve

Almost any 5x139.7 pcd wheels will fit. I know Daihatsu, vitara, lada niva and some older jeeps (CJs I think) fit.

Cheers Darrell, my best effort is wheel stud spacing. Diagram shows it just a bit better, lol.

I don't know the offset but the stock backspacing for an SJ is 95mm.
