Gearbox issues

Post by george123 » Sat Jan 04, 2014 9:55 pm

Hello iv managed to get the old girl started now but iv encountered another problem that I can only put her in gear when the engine is of an start it back up with clutch down! Then I can drive but when I want to change gear I can't without turning the car of and changing in to reverse it won't change gear well engine is running?! Someone said it could be a sticky pressure plate from clutch because it hasn't been drove for 2 years any help?

Thanks!!

That's a badly mal-adjusted or completely fubar'd clutch. If you're lucky the clutch cable just wants a little adjusting, if not, you need a new clutch.
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

Check the cable, it may be stretched or badly adjusted.

Failing that it's gearbox out for further investigation.

If it's as easy as a 1.3 it's a doddle to adjust. Just crawl underneath and you'll see the cable end go into the arm on the side of the gearbox bell housing.

Okay iv looked at getting the box out looks like a doddle! But the only problem is trying to undo the uj coming out the gearbox that bit looks hard? Also could the reason it isn't going into gear is because the clutch pressure plate could be worn? Or from where it's been standing so the clutch plate has stuck to the fly wheel?

It sounds like the friction plate is stuck to the flywheel with it not running for so long.

Try putting it in gear, brakes on hard, clutch down also, and then try starting it. With a bit of luck it should "crack" the clutch free.

If not, gearbox out :x

No need to undo the uj just unbolt the prop at the t/box
Sid James gone but never forgotten
Jimny 1.6 not as good as an SJ but still good
