Might need to place a block in to wedge the door open so you can push is further than needed as it will probably flex back out a bit.

Looking at the gap, ferris's suggestion should help, just loosen the 2 screws holding the catch for the door latch in the door opening and move it in slightly, might require the door to be shut a bit harder but should help.
