having to pump the pedal to get braking

Post by AshR1 » Tue Mar 18, 2014 8:27 pm

looking at buying an sj, seen one for sale but the bloke says the brakes need attention. after speaking to him he said he had to pump the brakes a bit to get them working the other day, anybody know anything that could be causing this at all? and is it or could it be costly to fix??

all help appreciated

Air in the system. Best to drain all the fluid, refill and bleed.

May also be a leak in the system, check all calipers / cylinders for leaks.

This generally isn't a major issue. All seals and brake components are easily available.

That's what i and others i have told have thought, but could it be a brake servo problem at all?

Without looking at it it's hard to tell.

From your description I'm sticking with air in the system or a leak.

mine did that when the rear drum shoes had worn away as in one full press the pads weren't touching drum. As jordi says just check all pads then give the system a bleed, i would also have a look at your brake lines and calipers/drums and see if fluid is leaking anywhere, just incase you have a leak.
