Clutch problem ?

Post by The Bird Man » Thu Apr 17, 2014 8:08 pm

Hello all, getting ever so closer to driving my SJ again :D Though I'm in need of some help from you kind chaps again regarding the clutch operating arm. The bolt that goes through it, how much do I have to have it tightened up ? I'm not able to put it into gear as it stands, could this be because it's not tightened up enough ? When the clutch pedal is pushed down the arm does move. :S

that bolt shouldn't have an effect on the operation of the clutch its just to keep the arm attached...
not being able to get into gear might mean the cable needs adjusting... either at the clutch arm end, or the bracket on the engine

Sorry I should of read my post before posting, I meant to say the bolt on the end of the cable that goes through the arm ? At the moment I can tighten it about another inch and half.

Ah ok yep you can adjust it on the weird shaped cable nut, but thats more for minor adjustment I think

The clutch cable should have 2x 14mm nuts that hold it onto a bracket on the side of the engine. You can adjust it from there as well.

If its still way too far out you can take the whole arm off the gearbox and turn it round on the splines

The other common problem is taking the gearstick off the gearbox when its in gear.
Makes it easy to put it back on wrong...
If its still in neutral should be OK though

Have you changed anything since it last worked?

This is from the manual on aligning the operating arm correctly on the shaft.

I've never noticed the marks before, but then again I haven't looked for them.

Just fired her up, and had a play with the diff lever and it shot forward !!!! but only in four low :S Also the prop the connects the transfer and the transmission together spins round until I put the clutch in so that indicates the clutch is set up right ? Nah changed nothing pal, All I've done it pretty much took everything apart, did the necessary work on the body and, painting axles ect... Then put her back together :) I had a look underneath afterward it shot forward and notice a drop of oil on the bottom of the transmission housing, can't see where it came from though.
