Driving to Mongolia - need a quick once over by an expert

I have a SJ410 1992 car in Coventry just purchased. 0.9l with 1.3l spare. I'd appreciate if someone know a keen SJ410 garage who can do a complete service, suspension check etc, and fit a winch on the front?

Hey, i too am doing the rally but next year.

Are you not worried that if you cant service the car that what happens if it breaks down? If i was you id be looking to find someone on here that you can pay if they would be whiling , to go through the car with you and talk you through some stuff.

the race is unsupported as im sure you know.

If you're doing 11000km then I think it will need a service on the way as well.

Also are you planning on driving it back? as ive bean reading the rules and unless you wanna pay loads of money to have them ship it back you'll need to drive it back so will be around 20,000 miles etc.

We will ship it back. And we are not racing it and basic servicing we will do on the way. Like oil and plugs. What are the things most likely to be required as spares??

Props with UJ's, wheels and tyres, oil (and not just engine oil), plugs, filters (and fuel one), shocks, petrol cans, radiator seal, (maybe a spare radiator), the list is almost endless.

Wheel bearings, exhaust bodge, more UJs, lots of bulbs, HT leads, possibly a gasket set, spare drain plugs (all of them), liquid plastic ( fuel tank repair bodge), brake pads & shoes (or do a rear disc conversion and use the same pads all round), brake fluid, spare brake flexis.

Lengths of various size rubber pipe for fuel lines, jubilee clips, I'd renew all the copper brake lines before you go. And don't forget cables ties and gaffer tape.

The list goes on. If i was going out into the middle of Mongolia I would have spares for everything!

You'll be surprised what random things can break! So you know how recent the clutch is? I would take one just in case! Take a slide hammer as you will need it if you break a rear bearing
I would also take a spare alternator and maybe even a water pump.
Silly things to go wrong but if it goes in the middle of nowhere you're in trouble!

How did I forget clutch?

Lots of common size "o" rings and oil seals, plenty of grease and a grease gun too. That is a lot of miles in any vehicle and it's surprising how grit and water and mud cause parts to wear a lot quicker.

It's not as if install road miles and the AA can come tow you to the nearest garage.

Tim did a front wheel bearing at billing with common size sockets and nothing more than a hammer and screw driver to remove the bearing nuts, remove and replace the bearing, then used the hammer and screwdriver to, and I use this term loosely, torque the bearing up.

There is quite a lot of Kazakhstan to drive through, mostly tough roads and no AA out there!
Personally I would rebuild the front and rear axles if you don't know their condition

Things are much harder to figure out the first time you do them, must easier to change your bearings and seals at home the first time not in the desert somewhere
