Hi, got a '91 with 63k on it. Engine good, sweet etc (so far) but gearbox noisy. I get a whine in all gears but that sounds fine (a happy-gear sound) and from memory my 410 years ago did the same. The BAD bit is if I press accellerator harder (up hill say) it goes into a graunchy mashing sound (not happy) - most notable 3rd and 4th (5 spd).
I know this Sami has spent almost all it's life on road so 2wd- hence best guess is main box.
Any ideas on severity of problem please, can I get this one rebuilt, or exchange a refurb??
I'd be well up for another box but where from, how to get a good 'un.
thanks, Douglas

Only way to guarantee a good box to to refurb one.
Approx £300, fairly sure you can buy all the bits to do it yourself if you're brave enough.

I've still got my old 5 speed that was in mine before the engine change if you're interested in changing it.
It was okay as far as I remember.
Whereabouts are you?

I would at least do a little diagnosis To check which box it is before you go to the expense and effort of fitting a new gear box.
Janspeed manifold, LWB Vit vented discs and calipers

Re: Sami gearbox advice please
Hi Dan, agreed - I'm sure the bad noise is coming from that area but could be the Tbox. As the noise is under load when moving, how do I get to find out which, any ideas? I plan to do an oil change on both boxes anyway just as a precaution,

Stick the t/box in neutral and gently run through the gears
Sid James gone but never forgotten
