no spark

Post by stevepsj413 » Thu Jun 19, 2014 3:22 pm

Just after a bit of help, Ive just fitted a 1.6 8v into my project samurai and i cant get any spark. I'm using the coil off the 1.3 sami, do i need a coil off the vitara? I'm pretty sure its all wired right, I've put a multimeter on the coil and its saying its got 11v going to it but when i crank the engine this drops to 6v? I've tried wiring the coil straight to the battery but still nothing, also when its turning over it doesn't turn over very fast, I'm using a 43ah 390a battery do I need a bigger battery? I know the coil and battery are both good because I've just taken them off my daily driver, any help or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks Steve.

Hi Steve, can you post up some close up pics of how the coil and dizzy are wired up?
Are the 2 wires between the coil and dizzy connected? if not then it wont work... also make sure the -ve coil terminal isn't connected to an earth...

hi Twiss, hope this photos clear, the wire with the blue tag on it is the +ve from the loom, this goes to the +ve on the coil then to the red wire on the distributor, the wire with the green tag is the -ve from the loom, this goes to the -ve on the coil and then to the black wire on the distributor, is this right or have i done something wrong, also there's 2 wires with bullet connectors on them coming out of the loom where the -ve comes out of the loom, are these meant to be connected somewhere? thanks again, Steve

This any help......

The negative terminal will probably have a wire going to the loom. This should be brown and goes to the rev counter.

Leave the wire from the negative to loom off for now, just to see if she runs.
Looks like the wires to dizzy are the wrong way around.
Bit confused about the wire colours :er:

pretty sure you should remove the black and white wire's crimp terminal from the plastic socket
Mine's the same wire colours as that so I will get a picture...
Probably be tomorrow afternoon when i get down there

Thanks for your help Darrell and Twiss, I had the wires from the coil to the distributor the wrong way round, I swapped them over and now I'm getting a spark. Still not turning over very fast, what amp batteries are you guys using? Thanks again for your help. Steve

Mine's four hundred and something. You sure the battery is fully charged? Maybe try jumping it and see if the extra juice helps, if not, your starter might be flubbed, or the heavy duty cables to it might be corroded?
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

Have you remembered to fit the earth strap from the engine to the chassis?
