std wheel arch removal & refit

Post by djc » Wed Jun 25, 2014 6:22 am

Basic question as new to the SJ, I want to stop some minor rust so I need to remove the wheel arches on my '91 SJ, and there are 'plugs' under/inside wheel arch. Do these just pull out? and if so are they then scrapped or re-usable. Found these on eBay which might be replacements:

They either use screws or little clips that you have to pull out the centre section before you can remove them.

When you take them out 9 times out of 10 they end up buggered. Best buy a new set!

Brilliant, thanks all. I seem to have both types - the screw version fixes through to bumper end moulding, and the push-in for arches. I'll get one out and check dia.
I suspected that donkeychomp - a lot of fixings go together fast (production) but knacker when taken apart.

That picture isn't very clear, are they not the type were you push the pin in to release them?

Had a closer look today, not sure what I have got now. They are black plastic and core is plastic BUT has a posi head. Unscrewing does nothing, they just turn. I may resort to just extracing one by any means to see what it is. Seems a fuss over a small fixing but i'll need to get the arches back on one day. I'll extract one and do a pic.

No white tailgate yet. Tomorrow's Thursday.

They will the fittings like I linked to on eBay, lots of them do have a posi head on.

You need something strong and thin to get the core out, it's not easy but I've always managed to get most of them out without breaking them.

Mine had metal screws holding the (metal) arch extensions
