problem on start up
problem on start up
Recently when trying to start my 88' samurai my engine isn't starting, it tries to kick into life but just cuts out or i just get a click noise when i turn the key, sometimes it does work but cant idle and cuts out or it works normal , anybody had this trouble before? I've read online about 'suzuki clicky starter' could this be what im experiencing?? Thanks in advance

Re: problem on start up
Also just tinkering around the engine bay I've noticed my fuel pump is leaking, could this be part of the problem?

Re: problem on start up
There are a few different noises a starter can make...
theres a click... which usually either means the solenoid is on its way out, or that it's not getting enough power through the small starter wire...
or a clunk... which means you have some kind of mechanical issue with the starter motor.
take the small thin wire off the starter
should just be a spade connection, possibly a ring connector on some starters
then, assuming that a) you're out of gear and b) there isn't fuel leaking onto the starter, use plastic handled screwdriver and connect the starter terminal with the big fat wire (from battery +) to the small terminal you've just taken the wire off
It will spark and give the starter full battery power. If it starts fine like this you should do the clicky starter fix. You just need some 30a wire, a few spade connectors and a 30a 4 or 5 pin relay
as for the fuel pump... I assume you have the standard pump? if its leaking it will probably interfere with the running of the engine so I would stop the leak before you continue

Re: problem on start up
Tbh I know some people (in one thread recently) have had a shedload of grief trying to get the right fuel pump
Might be worth considering switching to an electric facet fuel pump. Requires a bit of wiring to make it work but its pretty easy

Most of the time that you get a clicky starter it just means that the starter motor needs a good strip down and clean so try that before doing the clicky starter fix.

Re: problem on start up
or the small wire has corroded on the inside...
