Helloo there!!
I was going to the mongol rally in SJ410 and then I decide she was to good for it,
So I got a jimny.. And iv driven it from my home in north Wales to Budapest!
And iv clocked 1,300 miles so far with a heavy load on the roof and in the rear.
But I noticed as I climbed up a vineyard in Germany I had a horrific clunking steel sound at frist I thought it was a spring, but there all intact, and my wheels roll fine while its jacked up,
Now I have a horrible feeling its my rear diff making this sound.
Do you guys have any input on this? As I have about 15,000 more miles to do...

sounds like the diff or wheel bearing, not a lot I can help with in somerset though.

I'd check your transfer box, they are chain driven and the chains are known to wear, stretch and then skip teeth when your working you truck hard, test it by accelerating quickly for a start and see if it makes the same noise,

Is there a garage nearby you can pop it into for a check over?

And make sure you are heading in the right direction...Buda ain't 15,000 miles away!

Were you in 4wd or 2wd? Does it make the noise in both 2wd and 4wd?

Check the prop UJs as well, sometimes it's best to remove the prop to see if any of them have gone dry and tight.

Presume you gave all the wheels a good wobble and spin while it was jacked up??

Haha yeah they were jacked up cheers,
It could be a shaft you know, it seems to it when its under a lot wheigh mostly uphil's where the back ends low!
I'll take a look in the morning see what she's like underneath
We made it to sibiu in romania today, from budapest, I'll try post some picks of are jimny its cool as!

I had a broken spring on mine, I couldn't tell until it was removed.

All right chaps, little update,
We spent the night in a hostel, and in the morning we asked the girls who ran the place do they know of a garage we can go to, they told us they would get a friend to take to one,
Next things this huge Georgian chap turns up called oucho (or something) he took us to a garage and they put it on a pit didn't spot anything, so we took the mechanic for a spin and typically the noise wasn't there, but we had a eml light on we suspected it to be are cats so we plugged a computer in, and it was the cat oucho told us he would get them removed for free due to the cats scrap value, so we opted for the de cat option,
And fitted a new clutch seeing as ares was right at the top of the pedal, at the cost of?
60 of are finest British pounds and was done in about 3 hours,
And when are clutch was off, it looked like it had it pretty much as we'll have about 12k to go still,
As for noise, Its are T-box slipping they got it up on a ramp on mechanic put it in gear and another listen to are t box, now has anyone got a idea how long it would last?

good value getting a clutch done for £60! here it would probably cost that just for the clutch itself!

Boom, I love diagnosing issues from symptoms! I'm sorry though, I have no idea how long they last, it seems t be a pretty common thing for the chains to stretch though, a lot of offroad based jimny owners swap the transfer box for samurai item as they are gear driven rather than chain. If it's only doing it when your racing up hills I would keep going, until it fails
