remove rear half shaft with bearings.......

Post by courior » Wed Jul 23, 2014 9:19 pm

....... But without taking off the brake cylinder. Is this possible?

Some guides I have seen say to remove all hydraulics and brakes, while others say remove the shoes and then you can unto the 4 retainer bolts and use a slide hammer to get it out but leaving the brake mount in place.

I'm going to battle this tomorrow as the wheel bearing is louder than the engine at full chat :S

Cheers

Some use the brake back plate as the bearing retainer, this means the hydraulics/brakes need disconnecting.
Some (hopefully yours) use a separate plate which when removed lets the shaft out without doing anything to the hydraulics/brakes.

I'm not sure if the difference is an age issue or the country it's made/built in.

Right i had a go at it... and ive got the all in one type so had to remove the brake cylinder (which looks new!)... but that was the easy bit... I got to here *everything removed and brake backing plate loose):

But i cant get the half shaft out! Is there anything else i need to undo ( i didn't see anything in any of the guides)?

i put the drum brake cover on backwards and hit it with a hammer (big one) and it hasn't moved even 1mm out of the axle.. I put the drum on correctly and also the wheel and pulled on the wheel but that did nothing... i am at a loss of how to remove the drive/half shaft... could i heat up the axle casing so it releases its grip on the bearing? (i don't have a slide hammer) ... Maybe you know a way to make a similar tool to a slider hammer? any help v much appreciated!!

might want to get yourself/borrow a slide hammer, its the quickest and easiest way to get stubborn shafts/bearings out.

Well.. 3 hours with a hammer the other day and nothing.... then today i went to a local mechanic and he let me borrow his home made and damn heavy slide hammer and in 3 big taps the thing just fell out!! WHAT AN AMAZING TOOL!!!

I found a local bloke with a whopper of a press and he did the bearings in a couple of hours for a tenner and while i was waiting i put a thermostat in as it never had one.

Got the shaft back and put it all back together, the block i put on the hydraulic line failed and it emptied overnight. So i bled the whole system front and rear, now there is clean fluid in the system and brakes are pretty good condidering they are not power assisted.

Went down the road at about 40mph... killed the motor (no power brakes so not a problem) and it was silent... all i could hear was wind noise... WOW what a feeling.. did a couple of donuts in the local gravelly area to ensure the wheel and hub would come off which they didn't so job done... This car runs sooooo smooth and quiet its amazing!

Slide hammer on ebay is only 20 quid delivered to Malta for a 1.5 Kg hammer... i think the one i used today was at least 3kg.. was damn heavy for a hammer.. I might have a go at making one myself... if that fails i will buy one. Real nice bit of kit!
