Clonking door going over bumps

Post by courior » Wed Aug 06, 2014 10:48 am

Hi all.

I have read the post on rebuilding the door, but thats not what i was after (before you send me that way).

I have a clonk/knock coming from the drivers door when accelerating hardish/ braking hard and also when going over bumps. If i drive with the door open there is no noise so it must be how the door is attached/locked to the body. I have aligned the door perfectly and it closes without fouling on the door lock etc. but still get this noise. It makes no difference if the window is up tight or fully open.. so its not the winding mechanism, but as i said, door open= no noise... and no i dont want to remove the door! :P

Is there any common things to check?

Cheers.

Worn door pins, open the door and see if it jiggles up and down.

Something inside the door rattling round?

The door does indeed jiggle up and down a bit... Is there a good way to bodge this? maybe a coke can as a spacer or something?

The door doesn't rattle when open and i hit it pretty hard.. so its definitely the way the door fits in the car.

Is there any difference in when the window is up or down? My SJ drivers window rattled when it was down even a little bit because the sealing strip had fell out of the groove so it was rattling on the metal channel, turned out it had just slid down into the bottom of the door so that was sort after glueing it back in the channel

Only other thing I can think of is a silly question but does the door shut fully? As my hinges were worn badly so sometimes it didn't close properly so it rattled when driving, had to give it a good pull to close it...

Window up doesn't help. And door closes perfectly. I think I'm gonna adjust the hoop on the body so when the door closes it lifts it at the same time. If I lean on the door while driving it stops but have to lean hard. It sounds like some of the weather proofing rubber which has compressed and isn't putting pressure on the door to hold it in place.

Sometimes the doors bend at the top, you can bend them back in with some brute force and ignorance,

Thanks for that suggestion... Funny enough if I grab the top of the door the noise reduces a lot! .. I'm gonna try this first. Cheers
