I've done that in the past and it's been fine. Just clamp it enough to stop the fluid flow and it should be okay, don't go mad with the clamping.

Wrong wheel cylinder different length body shorter and no bleed nipple . on my anus there is a rubber hose feeding a metal hose going to both rear wheels and a bleed nipple on both cylinder.... the locating bolts are in same position ..even taking out the bleed nipple from old cylinder and trying to screw into new one its a different thread completely..i can sum all this up with 2 words CLUCKING BELL
If i mount the new cylinder onto backplate and found a bleed nipple that would fit the pistons
would have to move out further i guess would that matter ??????

I wouldn't risk it personally, probably better to find one that fits! :(

Well old cylinder reinstalled on backplate at least i can get back to them with the wrong cylinder
cleaned the rust from piston, bore looked good but smeared red brake grease on piston with rust removed from piston it now slides freely in the bore.....which it did not before......5 mile test and fluid still up to level.....wish it were possible these day to get repair kits as in bygone days.....
Will go gently on brakes until i find the correct cylinder....a lot if labour to get back to where i started from 2 days ago.......time for a big cigar and a gin and orange.....
