The true cost of cheap tyres
The true cost of cheap tyres
I'm fairly new to this but just recently acquired 4 tyres for a bargain £55, then a really good spare for £45. Thought I was doing well.
The cheap 4 came from Bletchley (200 mile round trip)... then the costs began to rack up. In my area it seems really hard to find anyone who'll fit them but eventually found a place, £48 inc vat (for the 4 - onto rims, no old tyres to remove and dispose of, note). The spare was shipped to me free. Then £42 to take the old tyres off my standard rims and fit the new spare to the 5th new rim.
Then off to the tip to dispose of the 5 old tyres. Another 15 quid - it's £5 for one or 2 tyres and I had a moan, asked for a buy 4, get one free - nothing doing.
So my set of 5 on rims, so far £205 plus some fuel, say £20 minimum. Turns out now the fronts are not properly balanced so it has to go back to get that sorted (probably all 4 to be checked).
With all the hassle and pratting about, a new set all fitted, balanced, old disposed of etc, looks fair value!!

Not really. My new tyres were about £300 delivered and then £55 to have them fitted...about half the price you paid!
If it ticks over...leave it

£380 for 4 tyres delivered, fitted for free.
Think my 33s were £480 and £30 fitting.

Re: The true cost of cheap tyres
I guess its very much a matter of luck...often with ebay these days
I bought four BFG Muds 235s that had hardly turned a wheel from one guy and four Daihatsu 7x15 alloys from another guy. I removed the tyres that came on the alloys and sold them. Then sold my white eight spokes with reasonably ok tyres on and also sold the spacers that were on my 88 SJ (shouldn't have sold them..)
Net cost...including fuel to collect items...£140!! Bargain....very much a matter of luck all transactions on ebay
At the end of the day djc...if you like the look of the truck then its worth the ££s...that's what I keep telling myself with my automotive toys!!

Well at least you didn't get one incorrect wheel and have to wait 3 weeks for a replacement!
I paid about £400 for my wheels and tyres, £28 fitting

That was later on. Took a 33 to be removed to sort a leaky bead and they took a chunk out the side wall, replaced it for.timwilks13 wrote:were they the ones that had a hole rammed in the side?Jordi wrote:£380 for 4 tyres delivered, fitted for free.

This is where it comes in handy to have multiple friends with tyre changing machines and balancers

Re: The true cost of cheap tyres
also where it comes in handy working at a garage with a tyre machine and a balance i bought 2 new/old stock for £175 posted and then bought 2 part worns with about 11/12 mm on each (under 3 years old) for about £40 ish each and i just take them to work to fit and balance
when it comes to fitting tyres its luck of the draw of where you go . . . i had a set fitted and balanced for £5 a corner before now
