PLEASE HELP which tyre

Post by Sparrowhawker » Sun Aug 17, 2014 12:02 am

A fellow member said to open a thread in the vitara section, as im really needing help with finding the right tyre for my fatboy.
Right this is the dilema, i run a fatboy running P265 50R15 Radial GT XR6000. Im wanting to keep my fatboy alloys and prefer not to need to do any mods as i want to keep the look i have. Im wanting a 60 40 tyre in favour of off roads that will give me as much height out the tyre wall as possible to get as much ground clearence as possible. So whats the biggest best tyre for me. Thanks for your time....

You are limiting yourself on choices if you keep the stock rims. If you want a 'taller' tyre you'll need a wider one too...otherwise the Vit will fall over in corners (jk but the handling would be compromised). I had 215's on standard rims, they were fine but my 30" tyres are on 7.5" rims. I'd keep an eye out on ebay for a similar wheel that you already have but wider.

I'm confused. He needs narrower rims with a big offset so he can choose from a larger range of tyres and still fill the wideboy arches.

His current rims are 10 inches wide.

Either that or try find some wide but lower profile all terrains.

I'm even more confused. If those rims are 10" how on earth are such skinny tyres on it? If they are that wide then the choice is almost endless. Said this before...get some all terrain tyres.

The closest size that seems to be widely available in all terrains that would suit a 10 inch wide rim is a 265/70/15.

The tyres that are currently on it have a diameter of 25.4" and 265/70/15 has a diameter of 29.6". I doubt they would fit in a standard arch without some sort of rubbing or binding off road.

265 wide is 10.5"

The tyres look slightly stretched in the photo so I guessed that as they are Fatboy alloys and they look very dished they are 10 inch wide rims. They may be 9" wide and the photo is just deceiving.

Either way tyre choice for a standard height vit to fit these rims is going to be limited as ATs and MTs aren't made in lower profiles so it will be hard to find some that fit the rims with a small enough diameter.

Found a few pages saying Max tyre size for a standard Vitara is 235/75/15. That is 28.9" diameter but won't be taking account of the big offset so a wider tyre of equal diameter may well scrub the arches anyway.

Need to find out how wide the rims actually are.

A 28.9" tyre will not fit a standard Vit. I'm now on 29" tyres and that involved Grand Vitara coils and cutting out the arches...at maximum articulation they still foul the arches so more cutting is needed!

Glad you are better...food poisoning is nasty...

Your rims are 10" wide then as they are measured to the inside edge of the lip. Probably going to be hard to find ATs that wide and a low enough profile to fit in your arches.

You are probably going to need to find some 7 or 8 inch wide rims with enough offset to suit the arches. Or run some 7-8 inch wide rims on spacers.

Or just bin the wide boy arches slap in some Grand Vitara springs and go for what I did but with A/T tyres.
