wheel bearing

Post by donkeychomp » Tue Sep 02, 2014 7:52 pm

Going to be changing the front wheel bearing tomorrow, it sounds awful! Anyone done this and have any tips on how to do this with the minimum of fuss?

Easy job as far as I know, that is if you have the correct socket

And a bunch of other ones to tap things in ;)

Um, maybe an impact driver for the screws. Hydraulic press ?
Think I'll shut up now.

The locknut is dam tight!
Robbed this lot from the workshop manual.
Hope it shows all right as I cropped loads of bits and joined together :S

Can someone tell me why my Vit has SJ hubs? It uses a taper bearing instead of a Vitara sealed unit roller bearing. Very confused here (that's not hard to do, really). Ordered an SJ bearing will arrive tomorrow morning.

Well that confused me too. So I've spent ages searching and some don't have a sealed unit, however it appears to have a one piece outer race and you don't have to set up the pre-load like an SJ ??
So I can see the locknuts dam tight either way.

My SJ has 2 separate taper roller bearings spaced apart, 2 outer races - 2 inner races.

So are all Vitara's fitted with a 3 piece bearing ???
Some just sealed, so considered 1 piece ???

"O" how am I going to sleep now........... :er:

As far as I figured it Vits have one piece cylindrical bearings, front ones anyway. The ones off my Vit are, once again as far as I can tell, are SJ413 ones. Ordered them using the number stamped on them so they are SJ. So why oh why put those hubs on a Vitara? Only reason I can think of, apart from having some lying around therefore free, is to use the discs. SJ's have pretty big front brakes, not sure how big Vitara one's are.

Still bloody confused.
