Engine Issues

My samurai broke down a few weeks ago, I choose to replace the head gasket myself and the engine now starts.

However, it runs for just around 30 seconds of it's own accord, but after that stalls if I do not put my foot on the gas, meaning I never even get a chance to close the choke, or let the engine get to temperature.

The vehicle has a non-standard carburettor fitted (of type we do not know), which appears to be dripping water and sounds like it's sucking in everything within 200 miles. The carburettor appears to have water in the pots, around 2mm worth...

The car has run and done a journey of around 2 miles since the head gasket was replaced, with no issues, the head bolts were retightened after this run...

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

I'm not sure if its the same on 1300 engines but on the 1600 there is a waterway than runs through the inlet mainifold and through the standard carb, if the gasket has failed then this could be where your water is coming from and giving you the running issues, i would take the carb off ( i haven't got a clue what that carb is ) and give it a clean out and fit a new gasket, perhaps blocking the waterway in the process if there is one.

the usual carbs people fit are Nikki carbs (doesnt look like that??), Weber (not a weber) or SU (its not an SU) oh and Hitachi/Holley 2BBL type DCP306 carbs (its not one of those) so it might be either a Hyundai pony or Daihatsu charade carb as they are the other two popular options???? or even something else

Tried a few things, stopped the leak.

The vehicle now runs, still only with the choke out. I let her idle for 30 minutes, three-point turned, and left her on for another ten minutes (1500rpm idle).

The carburettor now freezes, any ideas as to what's up?

Dumb mistake caused that, adjusted the wrong screw, have now fixed the freezing issue...

However, once again we are back with the issue where she hunts for revs, and we can't close the choke more than halfway without her dying :-(

Please help if you can, this is my day-to-day vehicle, will get some info and pics of her up once she's running again!

Hi.

I carnt say i recognise the carb, i dont know what it is, but it isnt standard, it isnt a webber and it isnt an su and i dont think its a Niki.
When you say your carb is hunting for revs, i would get the emmsisons reset on it, change the plugs, leads cap and arm.
When you say it wont run without the choke, this would suggest that the engine is running to lean. This means that the mixture needs to be reset and made richer, this should sort it out.

My sj ran like a sack of sh1t! got the local garage to get the emmisions right and now it runs like a watch.

We've played with the mixture - with little if any effect at all... :-(

i dont want to put a downer on it but tbh if the mixture screw doesn't effect the running of the carb i would be thinking about throwing at the neighbours dog and fitting an alternative carb, the most common is an SU. I've been looking into it and that carb is none of the ones i have mentioned above so gord knows what it is off? Would be interesting to know!

LOL! Knowing my luck with 4x4's it would probably be a bespoke carb with no existing manuals! LOL!
