Grand vitara 2.0 petrol (J20a) timing chain kits..

Post by Jay18 » Wed Oct 22, 2014 11:42 am

I have found two kits on eBay, one very cheap and the other more expensive but it does say OE quality

Here are the two different kits, what is the difference between the two?

I received a quote from suzuki to do it but I don't have that kind of money, so I'm going to try and do it myself, I have read thread on other forums about it so hopefully that will be enough to help me get it done, it doesn't look too hard, just time consuming, I will continue this thread as I do it incase anyone else needs to do it to theirs, may be a few questions along the way if anyone can help...

Big price difference for almost the same (only a couple of seals and a tube of silicone snot).

I guess it's just down to if the cheap one still has the quality, but how do you tell :S
Sorry ,I'm no help............

The cheaper version is from Taiwan, other than that I'm not sure, might be best to go for the more expensive OE quality one I think, either way it'll be cheaper than suzukis £1265 quote to do it for me, oil change this weekend and hopefully it'll quieten it down, if not then I will have to bite the bullet and get the kit and do it...

Should these be replaced at specific intervals?

As long as oil changes have been kept up to date and the correct oil has been used they should last a very long time.

Usually you'll hear a bit of a rattle when cold if the tensioners are wearing. At that point it's a good idea to get it changed as failure can be expensive and cause a lot of damage.

Not actually sure if there's a specified mileage to change them.

From experience the rattle isn't much to write home about when it starts to go. Plus after the engine has warmed up a little you can't distinguish it. There is no service interval for the timing chain just regular oil changes with the correct oil. And the chain should outlast the car.

My GV had not been looked after and had not been serviced in a long time, timing chain has been done now and there is no rattle at all, so now I'll just keep it regularly serviced...

Runs sweet now :D

That's good news, thanks for all the answers. I have my girl serviced regularly and oil changes the same so here's hoping it will continue to provide a great service.
