converting to injection help please.

Post by mk1joe » Fri Oct 31, 2014 1:00 pm

Hey guys, hows it going:)

ive come for more advice from the pros. basically ive been attempting to construct an intake/carburation setup for my 1.6 8v and it hasn't worked...

now what I really want to do is ditch the whole idea and fit standard spi. but I have time against me, this is going to be a real race against the clock.

basically I need to know what I need. manifold, electric pump? ecu? wiring harness?

to be honest I havnt looked anywhere on the internet yet ive just come straight here as im a bit strapped for time. so if there already any detailed "how to" pages, please could someone kindly direct me to them.

I think I know someone with a good stock of parts so im hoping he will have most of it. unless anyone else has everything I need already?

Thanks ever so much guys.

Throttle body, manifolds with all sensors, ECU and wiring, fuel pump, ECU, relays, VSS, lambda sensor, MAP sensor. SPI before 1996 has no immobiliser and is easiest fit, after 1996 the ECU is reprogrammable.

Thanks,
Is the fuel pump inline? And do I need the whole of the wiring harness? Can the lambda sensor be bypassed?

You can fit an in-line pump but a better solution is to use the tank and pump from an EFI Samurai. The lamda sensor is necessary to trim the fuelling.

And how much better do people think injection is than the standard 1.6 carburettor.

Carburettor is starting to sound a lot easier.

Why not just use a standard 1.6 carbed inlet converted to run an SU rather than try to make your own inlet manifold?

I may continue trying to perfect my own custom setup. But until then I need to get the car on the road and I just want to fit something easy and standard.

I just spoke to a guy about buying a 1.6 carburettor, he said he only has a spi unit but he thinks it may be easy to get it working without an ecu, just a high pressure pump.

What does the ecu do on a spi engine? There's only one injector constantly sprating and it's controlled by a throttle cable.

The carb option must be the best way forward,i would have said if you have the knowledge of fuel and electrical system indepth then yes go for it,but as you are asking question and still not 100% sure what each component does then i fear it wont be easy if at all.

Fitting a carb either original or after market would be so much easier and quicker to do than going down the long option and possibly even more un-relaible option of FI,of course i hope you do find a way to do it but i fear it wont be easy.
