Fitting a Oil Catch Can, Grand Vitara

Post by Jay18 » Sat Nov 22, 2014 12:03 am

Fitting an oil catch can is a must have mod if you want to help keep the engine running clean and give your sensors etc a longer life...

Oil that makes it through the PCV covers everything in the inlet manifold and throttle body causing harm to sensors and in my case the IAC, so for £16 off of eBay this should stop the oil getting into the inlet manifold...

I have thought about fitting a one way valve in the air inlet on the cam cover to stop any oil coming back into the throttle body, just to be sure no oil goes into the inlet what so ever...

Pics don't seem to want to upload so will try and sort that...

You shouldn't have oil going through the PCV just crankcase fumes.

I suppose we don't really know how much oil mist goes to the throttle body.
I can't see it doing any harm either way.

I just had a look on fleabay and most of them have a sight/level indicator so you can see what's going on.
I would assume on a healthy engine you wouldn't get much.
Let us know how you get on

There should be very little oil in the mist, there is usually a plate over the breather pipe that is intended to work as a separator. You only usually get any oil through if there is excessive crankcase pressure.

I had a lot of oily gunky stuff in my throttle body which has caused my IAC to fail and excessive carbon build up on the plugs and O2 sensors, so that is the reason for doing the catch can, I have made up the bracket and test mounted it before painting the bracket...

Question is, there are two soddin breather/vent pipes.
I assume the gunk on the throttle/valve is coming down the hose marked green.
But either hose will allow oil mist into the engine and therefore spark plugs and O2 sensors. :er: :er:

That's what I've been a bit confused about, I was thinking that the green would be air going into the cam cover and the blue being the one fitted with a PCV valve to allow the gases to go into the inlet manifold, so I was think of putting a one way valve on the green pipe to stop oily residue going in before the throttle body?

Or do I stay on the safe side and fit a second catch can for that pipe as well?

No 15 does show air coming out from both pipes. Don't think a one way valve is a good option.
A second can is the only way to control both pipes I guess :er:

Edit due to bad spelling.
