I've had the dizzy cap off while doing the timing belt, and also moved the distributor about previously but marked it before doing so and put it back in the original place. And thanks, yeah I was thinking about adding another one nearer the tank as well as that one. That current one is transparent also, which came in useful when connecting the up fuel tank and lines and I could see bubbles were being produced in the filter and found a crack in the sender pipe on the fuel tank

Some 410s had a mechanical advance only. I would check the ignition timing with a strobe. I would also do a compression test to confirm that the valve timing is correct.

Cushty, shall do !! Shall order the necessary tools over the next couple of days and then we shall find out what's going on
If the compression is low, how do I get it back up ?

If the compression on low on all cylinders then go back and recheck that you got the timing belt timed up correctly. If you change the valve timing at all then the ignition timing will also change.

I've not had my 410 for some time now but the cylinder pressures should be in the region of 170-190 psi with no more than ten per cent variation across the cylinders - don't forget to hold the throttle open when taking the readings and I suggest that you do a wet and dry test. Not wanting to insult you but if you don't know what wet and dry means - come back.

Ace, cheers pal !
Wet and dry, by dry I assume you mean just a normal compression test and by wet you mean dropping at tad of engine oil in each cylinder ? I also take it if compression is raised after adding the engine oil that's a sign of worn piston rings ?

Absolutely - got it in one.
