I would rather look to replace the switch.
It is on the transfer box correct ?
Any photos of what it is like.

Unfortuantely im not too sure what it would look like on a GV, on a samurai I think it's a screw in switch with 2 wires coming off it?
Could be wrong though...

Sounds like its doing what it should do to me.
The little dogleg in the shift pattern is just so there is something to stop the lever from being pushed all the way forwards or backwards in one movement or a nessecity due to the layout of the gears and shafts in the box.
Starting from 2H with the clutch down push the lever all the way forward until it can't go further. This should be 4H and the 4wd light should be on.
Move it to the left and it will still be 4H and the 4wd light should still be on.
Move it forward and you should feel a little notch as it enters N and the 4wd light should go out.
Push it all the way forward from there and it will be in 4L and the 4wd light should re-illuminate.
Reverse the process to go back.
Pull back till you feel the notch and light goes out and box enters Neutral.
Pull back all the way to the dogleg and box enters 4H. Light should be back on.
Move to right. Box still in 4H. Light still on.
Pull back all the way. Box enters 2H. Light goes off.
Don't worry about the freewheeling hub comment. The GV has an auto freewheeling front diff.

You can actually operate the box while moving at quite high speeds according to the handbook but I prefer to stop for peace of mind.
You might find you need to be a little firmer with the lever than you think as the transfer box isn't quite as smooth as a covemtional gearbox.

I also think you will probably find the light to be OK once you understand what the box is doing and are engaging it in a firm and direct manner.

Hi,
Nice long post and well worth the read.
I mentioned before....
Move lever from 2H forward say 2 inches,no light on,so am i in 4H now ?
Moving on from there,if i nudge the lever from the last position mentioned a little then the 4WD orange light is on,so i assume i am now in 4H correct ?
i am now able to move the lever in a left to right movement,whilst i am here i am still in 4H correct as the light is on ?
Moving it forward into 4L i have not checked if light is on so will check it now and see.
Please can you advise on the questions.

Just to add.....
When in 4H say "3 o clock" if i move the lever to the right "9 o clock" & let the lever go it then springs
back to the "3 o clock" position.
