You are right, thats what he said, the steam causes more pressure in the cylinder? my memory is terrible. But apparently cleans as well.

I have heard this said too, don't know if it's true or just a wives tale. Could easily be true.

It cleans but I don't think it expands anything like as well as petrol. Its used to cool the mixture to increase its density.
