Re: Engine now wont idle!!
Had a bit of a look at it earlier but can't work out the problem. Surely if I had a duff lead it wouldn't rev up without chugging? Also if I hold the throttle steady at the carb at say 2k, it still chugs/misfires and then picks back up, then chugs then picks up, its the same timing every time, like a routine.
The carb seems to gargle a bit from the intake when this happens. I tried carb cleaner down it but made no difference and tried pulling leads off but it still pretty much chugged for all 4.
Alsf its warm, and I start it it'll start easily and run for a few seconds and die, occasionally it will catch it and rev up and do the same :(

Re: Engine now wont idle!!
maybe check just to make sure u have fuel gettin up to the carb. take the fuel line off the carb an turn the engine over to make sure enuf fuel is deffo gettin up.
if all is well make sure u have a decent spark from ur plugs by holding one (with plastic or insulated pliers), attached to the ht lead, against the rocker cover and turn the engine over to see if there is a decent spark.
maybe check ur carb of an air leak if its gargling as well..
if not... perhaps timing..
good luck mate

Theres definately fuel getting to it! How much fuel should I be able to see entering it? If I look down the 1st chamber I can see it on top of the throttle plate.
I'll check the plugs too, but all was fine for a while at the beginning of the day then this problem just started. So Im thinking its to do with dirt or water

I'm struggling for ideas. Whereabouts are you? Postcode city will do if you're worried about internet security.

Re: Engine now wont idle!!
ah man this is a tough one..
had trouble gettin mine to run after doin the head gasket last weekend, eventually we got it goin and runnin smooth after adjusting the distributor timing. i had similar symptoms to yours... it would start but not idle. i could hold the revs on it but it was lumpy as hell when i let off... this maybe premature but maybe ur timing is slightly out, even if only by one tooth..
what exactly happened prior to the engine not idling?

Re: Engine now wont idle!!
It was all fine until about an hour into a pay and play day where I was going through mud and water etc then it just started doing this. I will check timing but I can't imagine it being this, although stranger coincidences have happened lol
The fact that it has been fine up until then and ran and idled great before makes me think its something fuel or ignition related.

yeah i know what you mean. this is a tough one, have you checked all the connections on the coil, and the distributor?
back when i first got the sj my coil went down and again it was a mess, lumpy as hell wouldnt idle etc etc. maybe it got soaked and shorted/ burnt out?

Re: Engine now wont idle!!
Try spraying wd40, carb/brake cleaner etc. around all the inlet manifold/carb gaskets and listen for differences to how it runs to check for air leaks? Could be a failed inlet or carb gasket maybe?
Have you tried a new fuel filter, checked the fuel cut solenoid wiring yet?
