It's funny really what is the pin out of your fog switch? Can you tell me its pin continuity in both position? In your drawing its just a box and doesn't describe what's happening, i think your trouble is in the fact you have tapped off the negative leg of the circuit, its potential will change as the circuit does,

I thought it was probably just me misunderstanding what it was i bought! thanks for that!

As for the switch i'm not certain whats what. But i can tell you its got a wire earthed, one to the battery and one to the relay. With the relay earthed it works perfect as it should. but its when i try to run the relay earth wire through the high beam switch that everything goes tits up. For the relayi think i've got earth on 85 and live on 86.

I thought the problem was the bulb in the switch allowing a small current to earth, making the light glow when in the off position and occasionally energising the relay.

that is the problem, but i think its the live that come through the high beam switch until switched thats causing it. wonder if i try and wire the bulb differently i could get it to work. I went out with the intention to put everything back together with out the earth on the switch, but then saw that relay and thought i had the answer!

You really need to know what's what, imo the way its wired the light should be on all the time then go off when full beam is selected (while the fog switch is in the on position) if this is the case instead of earthing the switch tie it to positive instead and it should work

Also do you have seperate connections for your lamp? If you dont (i imagine its incorporated into the switch) you need to fine which leg of the switch it is commoned to, this leg which is commoned needs to be on the relay side of the circuit rather than the battery side.

putting the fog light switch earth to live didnt do anything.

I put a switch into the wire going up to the stalk. when off this stops the light in the fog switch glowing and makes it work like it should. but obviously the relay wont work.

when i put the earth off my fog switch on the wire going up to the stalk the light is only on when button is on an high beams on, so i think this is what i'll do. Not what i wanted but somewhere near.
