Yeah they just hold the caliper together. I'd hoped to refurb them so would have wanted to split them.
I'm thinking I may have to get the MIG/chisel/molegrips/blowtorch out... damn I was really hoping there might be a tool available for this!

Do you actually need to split the calipers to get the pistons and seals out?
I can't say I've had the SJ calipers apart, but I've had other ones out, and I'm sure you don't always need to split the caliper.

@Darrell Yeah, sorry I did miss it. I was viewing on my phone at the time. You're also right, technically you probably don't need to do it, however I wanted to get the calipers cleaned up and painted as part of a refurb. Splitting them would have just made for easier shapes to rub back and clear the surface corrosion off prior to lacquering. After having a poke around I think I've found a handful to choose from in the UK which look like the right thing. For a few quid I'm tempted just to get one I think. Not in any hurry to do this rear disc conversion so don't mind taking some time with it.
Thanks for the input!

For my two peneth, I'd leave them together.
If there is no reason to split them, don't. Brake manufacturers don't put such special fasteners in just to piss people off, they do it to stop you pulling them apart. Seals, pistons and the caliper bore can all be cleaned to make work correctly without splitting the caliper.
Clean them the best you can, paint them, cover them in mud. Who's gonna know the difference?

@Ladaman that is becoming a more realistic plan
