I've gloss rolled a lot of big stuff, houses cars and train carriages, and found a good way to get rid of the roller effect is to get a clean wide brush. After rolling just light brush over the area, all strokes in the same direction and you would never know it had seen the roller, even up close. Dosent add very much time

Hmmm, sounds like a top tip. Might try that on one of my test panels.

Yea, its obviously best to practice first on a spare panel, prsctice makes perfect. Like scottie said, I didnt thin mine and it did leave an orange peel texture but it didnt look bad at all, I was very happy with it. I even had a few people tell me they thought it was sprayed, hehe

Im not too fussed about orange peel. Its the rust im fighting with now.

I'm going to try and get rid of 99% of the rust on the bodywork and replace the plywood bits with some aluminium or steel sheet before painting. I'm debating if I should put grub screws into the holes that held the soft top on and then cover then with filler to make it look a bit neater.
I'm never going to put a soft top on it, I live in Wales!

unless you use a Harris professional brush and the bloody bristles come out.,lol.!

oh.,huw if you put the minutest bit of white spirit in with your gloss it will thin it out just enough so if your lucky it will lay flat even with the roller and you can lay it off with a brush too if you still think its not as flat as you like.

And even still if you want a waterproof Matt finish you can get emulsion,yes i said emulsion indoor paint and half and half it with. PVA which will act as a moisture barrier . it won't be as sturdy as an oil based finish but at half the cost and will lay flatter than gloss . it is more workable to and it aint sticky either.!!

Thats a point use indoor paint alot of banger boys use that as its cheap
