its a brand new air filter and the choke is all the way back so I would assume its the mixture but the needle is only a turn out, ill take it in a bit when I'm home and see if the smoke thing continues cheers Scottie!

Did i read somewhere a blocked pcv valve can make them a bit smokey?

If the smoke persists i'd be tempted just to drop the down pipe off the exhaust manifold to see if any oil was making it all the way through.

Is it an hif44 SU yeah? if so with the adjustment wound all the way in is its richest point, winding it out (anti-clockwise) weakens the mixture.

Enrichen-clockwise
Weaken-anticlockwise

The smoke would be more of blue/grey than black if it was burning oil.

The valve on the intake manifold. It sticks up out of it and has a breather pipe to the rocker cover. It should rattle.

that is blocked because it was just sucking air into the manifold, and when I unblock it the engine runs funny and looses power?

There should be a pipe running from the Pcv valve to a T piece to the rocker cover and to the airbox.

I just run mine without the T to the rocker cover though. But I have a second port on my rocker cover for the breather side of the system.

I should probably unblock it then. like I say it was just sucking air into the manifold unblocked, that just didn't seem normal?

Yes the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system needs the vacuum from the inlet manifold to work properly. This could actually be the cause of your oil leak.

Without the PCV system hooked up you'll be getting a build up of Positive Crankcase pressure, pushing the oil out of the seals.

Think we might have found your oil leak issue
