The circlips hold the CV joint in the correct position in relation to the kingpin axis.

If you don't run them you are more likely to break CV joints as the shaft and CV can slide in and out slightly and will be more likely to bind.

that said I usually hook one side in and use a small flat blade screwdriver around a 3rd of the way round and lever round the shaft. works for me.
I use the same method. Works fine for me, literally two seconds.

Thanks guys

Yes, already have cheap both ways circlip pliers, will try to find new circlips i think to make life easy next time.
I've already tried holding out shaft with bolt and swearing with small screwdrivers, not worked so far, maybe more practice needed.

The benefits of living in Italy are more sunshine, the downfall is that ebay here is useless as is most online shopping, I've just seen on uk ebay loads of cheap sets of circlips containing enough to last a lifetime. Bloody annoying as 3 weeks ago drove back from UK with car full of SJ springs and full exhaust etc and loads of other cheaper stuff, if only I'd thought ahead alittle more , another £6 and small box of circlips and one less headache.

Just checking, I guess the measurement of external circlips will be the internal measurement of the old one ?

Circlips are sized according to the outside diameter of the shaft not the inside of the circlip

Just to add, it could be worse! When my front diff packed in on the way back from an off road site, I got my mate to sell me some free wheeling hubs so I could get home!
Had to change the circlips over in the middle of freezing cold winter in some crappy car park with no circlip pliers! It took ages and I think I was shivering for a week after that!!!
