Ha ha, swapped back to my 31s as they are more road biased (and a 33 is leaking round the bead) it feels painfully slow!

Got a pair of 4.8 diffs to pay for, collect and fit yet. Even on 33s 80mph will be a no no. So long as I can cruise at 55ish I'm happy.

There was a bloke on dufflock who did a diesel conversion, and he was adamant that it ruined his SJ totally, because of the excessive weight of the diesel engine.

I think he was called "Diesel Star Destroyer" or something similar. I think.

Whatever you fit, make sure it's light. I wouldn't fit the common (vauxhall, peugeot, VW) diesel conversions myself, I'd think about an all alloy block (inc turbo and intercooler, Toyota 1.4D-4D - 99kg, about the same as an M series engine, or VW 1.2TDI 3cyl, about 65kg, slightly less than a G13a).

The yota is 145ft-lb/90hp standard, the VW 120/70. New manifold and turbo (and retuned ECU) have seen 200/120 out of an older generation of the Veedub 3pot 1.2. Sounds good to me so far, but...

Either of those will require you transfer over the wiring loom, ECU, ignition/key, dashboard electronics etc from the same car. Vastly more than a lot of work, which is why I dropped the idea.

I suppose you could just follow Twiss's lead and go custom ECU, but that can be spendy, and just as complicated (you've got to create a fuel map etc).

I'm liking the idea of a J series swap more and more. It's (supposedly, from what I've read online) similar in weight to an M series engine (the 1.8 is, the 2.0 has a cast iron bottom end, or so I've read).

If you're serious about doing a swap, think about how much time/effort you're willing to throw at this.

Diesel Destroyer - he adopted the nickname as a reference to how many engines he got through trying to get it all set up reliably. It was a very long and very expensive process.

One of the engines:

J20 is an alloy block.

Yes, same block as the J18, and I'm referring to something I read a while back - it said the 18 has an ally brace and sump at the bottom, while the 20 has a seriously heavy cast iron set down there.

No idea what the truth is, that's just something that I read.

*edit* - this thread says it's the crank case and main brace, doesn't mention the sump.

It's an all alloy engine, I have one sat in the workshop ;)

I know ye does mate, I'm starting to think that if I do an engine swap, a J20 is the way to go too.

If you're sure it doesn't have horribly heavy cat iron bits, that is!

In, like, 2015, maybe 2016...

I think I *will* go 2.0, or maybe even (if I can get my hands on one) a 2.4. I'm thinking that going up to a 1.5 or 1.6 is a lot of work, might as well do the job *properly*. We'll see - it's a long way off, I'm currently totally sick of having my SJ not on the road!
