Maybe for the time being whip the existing thermostat out and run it without one fitted, it's good for a short term solution but I would never advise running without a thermostat for long.

Providing that it is just the thermostat that is the issue it should stop the overheating and reduce the chance of blowing the head gasket from overheating. If however without the thermostat fitted it still over heats then there is another problem.

I reckon it's the stat, so hopefully an easy fix. There's a paper gasket on the stat housing, undo bolts and prise housing off carefully and you may be able to re-use the gasket, new stats don't always come with new gaskets. Failing that get some gasket paper and make one, I had to do that for my fuel pump gasket.

Have found gasgets on eBay also, hopefuly should all be sorted by the weekend, failing this I shall be back on here :-)

Hi, have put on a new thermostat and replaced gasget at the weekend, flushed it and refilled it, drove about 25 miles mostly motorway at a steady 60 all the way and all again the water is all gone from radiator and overflow reservoir ??? Any ideas what to try next please. Thanks.

What temperature did it get up to? Have you replaced the rad cap as well?

Just over the halfway point on the temperature gauge and no haven't changed rad cap

it might be stuck with all the gunk in it, allowing your radiator water to heat up and escape into the expansion tank as steam... but thats a hell of a lot of water to be losing over 25 miles!
worth replacing though as they are only like £5

I would check for a possible headgasket failure as well.

Get a compression and sniffer test done.

I wonder if it has the wrong temp sender for the temp gauge fitted so it's showing the wrong temp but actually overheating.

Will try all of the above, how do I know if its got the wrong temp sender on it ?
