Fan Question

Just an update.
I have replaced the viscous coupling and have now driven 200 miles without any problems.
Today i went up the motorway and the temp gauge went from 3 o clock to 1 o clock,not gradually but straight away.
Then after 30 seconds say it dropped back down to 3 o clock and there it stayed,which is where it normally sits when driving.
Checking the water some 9 hours later its on the mark and no water has been lost ?

I think maybe the temperature switch has an issue "resistance wise" and causing the gauge to act odd,as its funny it always does the same thing on the gauge.
Can you advise where on the engine i will find the switch which controls the gauge.
I did see something right at the back of the engine by the firewall & hoping its not that one ?

Today's update.
I purchased a thermostat and will be fitted tomorrow.
I gave the cooling system a good flush out with the hose pipe then I also back flushed it.
Removed the old thermostat and fitted the cover and pipe back on the engine and refilled with just water.
Now driving without a thermostat fitted after a few miles the needle reaches the 3 o clock position, which is where the needle normally sits as if a thermostat was fitted.
This took a while longer than normal due to no thermostat fitted.
Quite happily stayed here for the 10 mile drive.
Heating air inside the vehicle was warm and no problems seen.

I hung the thermostat with cotton in a glass jug, boiled the kettle and filled the jug to the top.
Thermostat never even opened for the 5 minutes it was in the water.
I poured the boiling water away and took out the thermostat by hand as a test and boy was it hot.
I think with your help I have found the issue.
Tomorrow I will fit the thermostat, refill with anti-freeze and test.

Took note of the bleed valve position in the old stat.
The old stat was marked 82 degrees

Thermostat has been fitted roughly 7 days now and so far so good.
Gauge has sat steadily at the 3 o clock position.

Todays update.
Temp gauge needle went from 3 o clock position straight up to the start of the red.
Stayed there say 2 minutes and then straight back down.
I noticed that the fan in front the air con rad was running for a while then stopped ??
I disconnected the plug from the temp switch at the back of the engine and the fan started running & the temp gauge needle did not register any reading,as you would expect.
I then put the plug back on the switch,temp gauge needle then registered a reading and then fan stopped.

Off with the plug,fan started to run.
On with the plug,fan stopped.

Any advice as im a little lost now,when cold the next day water level is still on the mark and not a drop is lost.
