Ive encountered a small problem in that the new alternator belt (1.3 as im using original alternator and redrilled crank pulley) is too short, but the old belt is a fair bit longer (an inch or 2) but is TOO long now, as the alternator hits the steering column when I go to tension it.

Its nowhere near tight enough. Buy why wont the new belt fit?? Ive double checked the part number and its correct for an SJ413

Another post!!
Think Ive found the problem.....It would seem that when the bendix gear is stopped with something (i.e. a flywheel) the motor just spins.

Basically I hooked the motor up sitting on the side and when I put power accross the solenoid it started to spin up, so I stuck a spanner against the bendix gear and it just stopped, while the motor continued to spin up.

No wonder it cant turn a flywheel!!!

EDIT: I cant understand why the motor spins with just the solenoid being powered on the small spade connection? It seems to spin the opposite way to what I would have though it needs to, to turn the engine. Maybe Im just being dozey

The starter solenoid has 2 coils in it, one goes direct to earth (hold in coil) and the other goes to the motor winding (pull in coil). This will make the motor spin with just the solenoid powered.
And before anyone asks why is it like this I haven't a bleeding clue :D , I thought it was just the one coil to earth :er:

I had the same problem with the one way clutch on mine once and couldn't get a spare clutch anywhere and ended up buying a recon unit.
When I was a lad (only 20 years back  ) you could buy the starter parts separately and fix them yourself. Now everybody just wants you to buy new or recon.

Ah ok, thanks for clearing that up mate! ;)

I guess that means my starter isnt broken then, which brings me back to square 1 and trying to figure out why it wont mesh, its not even NEARLY meshing. Although a couple of times when I let go of the key it would kind of "kick" the flywheel a few mm but thats it.

Does this sound like it could be the clutch mechanism then? Im not sure if its normal for the bendix gear to stop when apply something to it.

I'll get the vid up, bare with me

Really bugging me now, Ive run out of ideas and tried everything but to no avail

Being a sad git and always wanting to know how something works, found this--

The dual coil solenoid offers high actuation force in a small package compared
to a single coil solenoid. It uses two separate coil windings to allow the solenoid
to be held energized for long periods of time without overheating. The first
wound coil (pull coil) operates at a high current level to provide maximum pull or
push. The second wound coil (hold coil) holds the plunger in place after it has
completed its stroke.

Still not sure really  :D

No, looks like the overun clutch is knackered

Would like some other opinions before you condemn it though.

What Im doing with the spanner is effectively the same as it engaging with the flywheel and not being able to turn it, yes? Hopefully that is the problem, at least I know what it is then lol

Some more opinions would be great though :)

Which part is the actual clutch? The gold coloured round bit inside, under the gear?

EDIT: just realised its on the diagram above. Not that I know of, i did put a tiny bit of grease on the spiral gear at the bottom of the shaft. but only a tiny bit after I cleaned it up
