Is it the standard (viscous) fan? Sounds like the heat operated clutch in the fan is knackered

I think the non-official test is to poke a rolled up newspaper into the spinning fan when the engine is hot. If it shreds the paper, the fan clutch is fine, if it stops the fan, you need a new fan clutch (or just a whole new fan)

Yeah it's running the standard viscous fan. I've had the temperature from cold all the way to 3/4 on the temp gauge ( normally 1/2 way ) and I can stop the fan with my hand every time i try it. I'm going to try source a new fan and fit a Citroen/ Peugeot electric fan to the front of the rad as well as I'm hoping to use it for off roading days. I'm going to take the head off anyway. This way I no everything will be new and right

I'm not sure that's a valid test on a Vit as the fan is designed to freewheel over 3000rpm sop it doesn't take much to stop it. If it gets really hot then it should lock up but I think you'd be close to overheating at that point. When my fan clutch went it was so sloppy you couldn't miss it.

So had the head off today and it all looks ok. No breach in the head gasket that I can see. I'll send it to the experts Monday and see what they say.

No, you probably need a new O ring in there.
