Sorry to cock and ball it up but I agree with Anton. I like diesels aswell I must admit I miss my diesel engine in the suzuki because of the torque but then it lacked alot of top end speed but then now with the vitara engine I like the power it has behind it. I personally think that different enginges suit different types of trucks

It's all about the gearing!! Don't forget that, you could have loads of torque but gear it wrong and it won't be useable! Likewise you can run a stock 1.3 with 38" tyres and it still be useable with the right gearing.

Anyway I'm pretty sure the 128lbs ft of the j20a is more than enough in a light Sj with dropped gearing.

I was about to say scottie, it's all about gearing. I don't ever go above 2000rpm in mine, and never use full throttle. Ever......

5.125 diffs and 5.1 transfer box, makes my suzuki lower than shagging your own sister.

Gearing is a vital part in off-roading, power and speed come much further down the list.

Lower gearing serves to increase torque at the wheels, so whilst I agree that loads of torque but the wrong gearing will be a rubbish combo, and a standard 410 could pee all over such a truck - you'd have to get the gearing *very* wrong with 128ft/lb of torque before the vehicle stopped being awesome.

I'm running standard sammy gearing (standard t-case, standard gbox, standard 3.7 diffs) with a standard engine, with 31's. And while it could be better (I have a 410 t-case to go in) it's not that bad.

With double the torque, I probably wouldn't bother with my 410 t-case. I'd drop a J20 in, see how it drove, and then decide. I wouldn't mind slightly higher gearing for m-way speeds.

But for me, the 410 t-case is sitting around waiting to be used, and I have no J20. So I'll drop in the t-case, and hold on to the 413 one in case one day I get more power and decide I *still* want a rocklobster...

Because despite everything I just said, lower gearing is always better offroad! :doublethumbs:

Horses for courses. Depends what you're driving, how and why. The way Twiss drives, for example, I don't think he'll be dropping the gearing any time soon. I certainly wouldn't in mine, a couple of times at Wagtail I found myself in 4th gear in the low box, but there again mine's on road tyres.

hahah thanks ed! I will be lowering the gearing slightly by getting rockwatt to make me a rocklobster :)

I'm going to up the boot size to 31" this year so hopefully I should be able to keep my top end and some acceleration :)

Agreed. If I got more torque, I think I'd like a fairey/superwinch overdrive unit from an old landy (yes, yuk, landy parts - but this is from a series I/II/II, before they got all crap and unreliable), so that cruising motorways, I could sit at 70 at 2700rpm instead of about 4000. Then I'd like to line the inside of my SJ with rubber matting to cut down on road noise.

I'd like to (eventually) get my SJ to cruise distances without tiring me out, the same way my Yaris does (70mph at about 2300rpm is much less stressful than 4000rpm). Then I wanna drive it across Europe - although that's going to have to wait until, probably 2015/16.

He can get completely custom, brand new gearsets made for only fractionally more than taking a 410 and 413 set and welding them together. I would *love* to have a 413 high ratio, 4:1 low, and an overdrive. Awesomeness off road, comfortableness and civility (as much as can be afforded by an SJ, anyway) on the road.

Yes, yes please! :)

Pipedream right now. But one day, who knows?

I found it awful. It was like pulling away in 3rd all the time, ragging the tits out of it in each gear to make it move and struggled with top end power. Everytime it looked at a bank you had to change down at least one gear. The standard samurai drive train on 31s was painful on the road.

Once the rock lobster was in it was a million times better, not to mention the massive improvement in fuel consumption.
