So I've been out this morning and its bubbling back through into the expansion tank again and you can hear it bubbling in the top hose. Air leak? Maybe but a bit of a coincidence it's doing the same as before. Can not working. Possible. Like I said before I can stop it at all temp with a newspaper/hand. Is there anyway of locking a viscous fan to run permantly to test the theory before getting hold of an electric item ?

So I attempted an electric fan and it was worse than a broken viscous. I've locked my viscous as a temporary measure but its still bubbling in the overflow bottle when the temp reached half way
I've replaced:
Head gasket new
Thermostat new
Water pump new
I've also had a sniff test done and compression test just to confirm the new head gaskets ok and all seems ok. On the upside I drives flawlessly. What else could I do. Rad cap?

Run it up to temperature with the rad cap off and see if any air comes out, you may have an air lock.

Wouldn't that have escaped now? When the rad cap does let air escape at what temp would this happen and I'm sure it would bubble away like it is now. Just popped out and the level has gone from the full mark to empty so it is returning back to the rad like it should.

When the rad cap is on the system is under pressure which keeps the air from moving up. Without the rad cap on air will make its way tot he highest point which should be where the rad cap fits.
I always do this know when I've drained the radiator without doing this I found it would overheat quite rapidly once I got onto a dual carriageway.

I'll give it a try. I'm just curious as to why its doing it when the fan runs constant. I'd uderstand if the gauge creaked up as well.

Well did a 10 mile journey to the mother in laws today and it bubbled away all it's water and reached 3/4 on the temp gauge. While I was there I spent 2 hours flushing the system running it up to temp and trying to get the air out of the system. I think it's worked as the same journey home and just over quarter on the temp gauge and no bubbling once I pulled up outside my house. The big test will be on the way to work tomorrow. Thanks for all the advice though. It is very much appreciated

Well work and back without a problem and on the hottest day of the year. Can't complain at that. Just to source a working viscous now
