Re: Not striking up
So the valves need to be open not closed ?
Re: Not striking up
If the valves on no4 are both open then no1 is at TDC and vice-versa. If it doesn't make sense then its probably best just to whip off the rocker cover and check that when you think no1 is at TDC both the valves on that cylinder are closed with a noticeable gap .

Re: Not striking up
I thought the cam was timed to number four on these engines ?
Re: Not striking up
The procedure given in the FSM sets the valve timing at no4 TDC but it makes no difference as long as the ignition timing is properly set with no1 at TDC.The Bird Man wrote:I thought the cam was timed to number four on these engines ?

Re: Not striking up
The Bird Man wrote:This is what I've done so far, number 4 piston at top dead center, crank sprocket timing mark lines up with the mark on the block. Both intake and exhaust valves are closed for that cylinder, the exhaust valve has been closed for a while and the intake valve has just come back up and is closed, cam sprocket timing marks also line up with the notch on the timing belt cover. This is the engine timing set up right isn't ? While it is like this the rotor arm was pointing to number four on the dizzy cap so I took the bolt out and took the distributor out and turned it to number one. This being all done, I don't see why it shouldn't start. I haven't missed anything have I ?
With both valves closed then no4 is at TDC on the compression stroke and the rotor arm should also point to no4. Which way are you turning the engine? I can't remember but did you do a compression test?

Re: Not striking up
In that case, I've set everything up as it should be but still nothing, not even any back firing !!

Re: Not striking up
In that case that's exactly the way it's set up now Have been turning the engine clockwise, and yeah compression test it one of the first things I did. 180 on 3 cylinders and 175 on another. Can't remember which on though I'm afraid.
Re: Not striking up
You are getting a good flow of fuel to the carb yeah?
Shame I'm not local otherwise I would be over to give you a hand.
