Yeah it does seem to be a common failure point on these engines, I have been running this engine for quite a few years with minimal issues and it does get thrashed a bit off road every now an again so it's bound to happen eventually. Luckily my workshop is 3 minute bike ride from my house and I don't need it to get to work so I can get by without it for a week or 2. Just need t get my LWB done so in a use that as a DD and this will be more of a toy.
I always keep spare head gaskets in stock at the workshop so that's sorted. I'll give the head a good check over once it's off with a straight edge and feeler gauges then if it's out of spec I'll get it skimmed and give it a complete overhaul. I was tempted to use this as an excuse to get to work fitting the J20a but I should probably leave that until the Lwb is on the road as there's a lot of wiring involved.

Not sure what a J20a is, guessing some type of motor. I agree some of these mods can snowball into taking way too much time. Getting a backup vehicle would be less stressful on you in my opinion.
Just started to gather some info on a hybrid motor that I would like to build.
Using:
G13a short block ( no special adapters need ) a
G16 1.6 16v SOHC head
Make an inlet for a set of (4) 36mm GSXR Carbs
some type of 1.3 Dizzy adapter to mont on the G16 head.
Not sure which pistons to use yet. May end up just cutting some valve reliefs in the 1.3 pistons and be done with it.

Jimny (pre-2004/5) pistons?
The whole bottom end might work well for your project, actually.
Or just get a Swift GTI engine?

The j20a is a 2.0l 16v out of the newer grand vitara, also believe the Suzuki aerio in the US had the 1.8 and 2.3 versions of this engine fitted (wish we could get the 2.3 here!). It's an all aluminium 4 cylinder with mpfi and coil packs, standard they are 126bhp and I picked up a whole vitara for a good price and parted it out so the engine hasn't cost me anything.
Unfortunately Anton they didn't get the Jimny in the US, however it looks like the 98-2001 geo/chevrolet metro was also fitted with the g13bb so that could be a possible source of factory pistons with the correct valve reliefs.
It is also quite easy to make an adapter to fit a 1.3 dizzy on the 16v head, in fact I'm pretty sure I know someone who has just drilled and tapped the head to bolt the dizzy housing on? I'll find you some links.

The head was still within spec so cleaned it all up and put it back together.
It lives and sounds sweet
hasn't idled this smooth for a while
