Anyone's guess how well that would work, how are you going to control idle speed? If you want to go COP then your best bet would be to use coils with the driver built in then you only need a 5V drive signal.

Yeah Im going to use the coils with the built in drivers... would be nice to have the option though...
What I would like to do ideally is use a 256-step stepper motor IAC valve from a anus, as they don't require any mods to the ECU to connect them
The fast idle solenoid allows more air into the manifold, bypassing the throttle and thus bumping up the RPM. As you say though, not really very controllable!
I think it would be a job of trying different valves and pipework combinations to find the right throughput to get it idling right at cold

rhinoman, do you know anything about the TPS on the 16v? I'm not sure if its the same as on an 8v?
I've got a 4 wire TPS and not entirely sure what the connectors are?
I know theres got to be a 5v ref, signal and earth... but not sure which pins they are?
Do you know if it also has a 12v ignition signal?
If it helps I know the wire colours... Gr/R, B, Gr/Y, Bl/W

Gr/R = 5V sensor supply
Gr/Y = 0V sensor supply
Gr/B = TPS voltage
Bl/W = Idle switch

OK cheers... Im looking at the FSM you posted up for the LWB 16v vitara
But I can't see the IAT sensor in the wiring diagram? Im assuming its one of the sensors mounted to the intake manifold
I'll go get some pics shortly...

Post the pics, there may not be an IAT sensor.

OK... some pics
most of the sensors and all of the injectors have blue with black tracers so I'm assuming that is a shared earth? are the injectors normally positive switched?
Inlet manifold...
red is possibly IAT sensor? I'm guessing it has a separate bracket and pipes to avoid heat soak?
Yellow is a pipe (presumably for air) going to what looks like either a PWM valve or stepper motor

This is what the metal pipe marked in yellow goes to...
6 wire connector so is this a PWM valve? Or part of an EGR system?
colours are grey with yellow, grey with red, blue with black, blue, white with blue, and grey

This is the item marked with red...
blue with black and green with yellow
So I'm assuming this it the IAT sensor

This is my TPS... I got the colours earlier wrong though!
Grey with red, grey, blue with white, grey with yellow

water temp sensor... temp gauge sensor is next to it out of shot

The six wire device is the EGR, what year is the engine? whats it out of?

Id have to check with Andy (who i got the engine off) but looking at pics I think its a late model 4U
like this with the plastic air inlet pipe

Edited to what I believe is a more accurate diagram.
