SJ410 over heating
SJ410 over heating
Thought I had a problem with it when I drove it home, but put it down to bad servicing, and decided to do all the bits.
So after a new set of plugs, leads, Oil and filter, air filter, fuel filter, rad cap, thermostat, and a full coolant flush, I thought I Was good to go.
But today, I took it on a long-ish run (15 miles), and after 10 mins, it soared up into the red, and I had to pull over.
It cooled down pretty quick, and I carried on.
But within another few mins, it was boiling over again.
I managed to limp it home. I know it's naughty, but threw a bit of K-seal through it, but it's defo not having it.
Checked again this evening. It boils over, even with the rad cap off and thermostat completely removed. And boils over within 5 mins at idle.
I'm drawn towards it being the cylinder head, as the whole system heats up, even blowers are consistently hot, so I can rule out Water pump and air locks.
My only concern is it being a cracked cylinder head.
So tomorrow I will be pulling it apart. I'm tempted to just pull the whole engine out, as it feels like it needs a clutch anyway. May as well do it all.
I've looked into Vitara conversions, but seems a lot of work to do it from a 410, as I'll need to source all the 413 bits first...

Re: SJ410 over heating
have you got an expansion tank on it?
my 410 didnt used to have one and it started overheating cause of lack of water in the system as it spews it out when it gets warm...
so i put an expansion tank on the bracket off a jimny, never overheated since...

Re: SJ410 over heating
Is it using / losing oil or water? Any signs of oil in the coolant or water in the oil?

Re: SJ410 over heating
Sounds like it could be a headgasket as it's overheating so quickly, first steps would be a compression and sniffer test.
Might be worth getting the head checked for warpage and pressure tested while it's off.
Tbh it's not that hard to source all the bits for a 1.6 conversion and you should be able to do it for under £200. It's worth it in my opinion, just make sure you can hear the 1.6 running before you buy or get it from a trusted breaker.

Also. Make sure your radiator fins are not packed with mud and that your fan is working correctly.

Re: SJ410 over heating
I'd double check the timing is OK as well... if your timing is off it can heat up your engine well quickly!
When I first put my engine in and went down for the MOT (i was in a hurry) the timing was off and the exhaust manifold was glowing red hot within minutes!!!

Re: SJ410 over heating
I have the opposite problem. My 410 doesn't seem to get properly hot. Seems to stop at about 75 degrees unless I plant my boot through the floor for a good five minutes.
There's three ways of doing things:
The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

Re: SJ410 over heating
The only time mine has overheated is when I was trying to get up a very hard green lane i planted my foot down and failed and tried a couple of times and noticed the temp gauge was really high so I gave up and let it cooled down for 20 mins

Presume it has a thermostat fitted? Also where are you getting the figure 75* from?Edweird wrote:I have the opposite problem. My 410 doesn't seem to get properly hot. Seems to stop at about 75 degrees unless I plant my boot through the floor for a good five minutes.
