OK peeps I have searched and read till my little brain is fried

Here in Cyprus, I drive with my soft top open at the back or with a safari top 9 months of the year. I am thoroughly pissed off with smelling the exhaust. It is terrible on the rare occasion I have a rear seat passenger.

I shall soon be getting a new exhaust and wondered where people have their exhaust exiting? My current exhaust is, I think, the wrong one for my car, it may be for 410?? Dunno.

Can you tell me (or better yet, show me) how you have your exhaust and please give feedback on how much fumes you get - maybe I am asking too much? The attached pic shows mine and it is just under the rear bumper.

My cherry bomb exits in a slightly different spot to that. I won't bother with a photo as its useless because I still get a cab full of fumes.

Mine fills up as well lol! After reversing into a bank and snapping my exhaust pipe, the next time I made it so the tip was level with the bumper, to be honest i would quite like to extend it a couple of inches but not sure I can be bothered

Extending the exhaust probably won't help, as I have a feeling that your problems are being caused by the aerodynamics of the SJ.

All vehicles are followed by a low pressure vortex as they drive down the road, and this often causes air to travel in unexpected ways.

For example, pickup trucks can have air moving back up the pickup bed towards the cab, up the cab and then back into the airstream slipping over the vehicle.

If you're smelling exhaust fumes, it's because the air behind your rear bumper is being sucked back into the cab in the same manner, and a 3 foot extension would probably be needed to solve the problem.

A side exiting exhaust might work, but ultimately the only way to be sure is to either model your SJ in a fluid dynamics software package, or "suck it and see".

Tbh I did notice it as soon as I put my 16v in and made the exhaust... mine seems to gradually fill up when you are stationary. Only really notice it when moving if both the front windows are down halfway and it seems to suck it through...

Still, its better than the first time I fired it up with no zorst manifold haha

When I fitted the Ignis engine and fitted a bike silencer. The most convenient point for it to exit was by the chassis rail and pointing at the back of a rear wheel. So still under the car, and probably should fail the MOT, but it doesn't
Anyway, since fitting this exhaust it has much improved the lack of fumes in the car. I used to get a few in before, especially with the back of the soft top rolled up, but now it is MUCH better.

Thanks guys - some good info. Ladaman, I was thinking it would be better to go out sideways so I think we are getting somewhere.. pity I can't remember how the standard exhaust goes?

Anyway off to the US forums to see what I can find out.
