1985 Swift GS engine into SJ410?

Post by binge » Wed Apr 09, 2014 1:12 pm

Is the Swift GS (1.3 SOHC) engine the same as a Sammy engine?
If so, I've a nice Swift GS here, running with 75k miles on it, will whip the lump out for my SJ410 rebuild, as my current Sammy engine I bought from a nice member of the SJ community isnt the 'good little runner' it was advertised as. :|

Yes it should fit but you might have issues with the dizzy clearing the bulkhead and you will need to fit a 1.3 gearbox.

I have a complete sami engine here so I will loot all the parts I need from that.
As for the dizy, would the SJ one fit?

Got the engine back to my garage today, and pulled a few bits off it.
It didn't take long to realize it wasn't the same as a 1298 SJ413 engine. Oops.

So any ideas what differences this engine has?
It's a larger CC, does that mean it's a bigger bore? Or just a longer stroke?
Are the heads the same as the SJ engine? And if so, are the Dizzys the same or different?
If they are different, will they swap over?

Flywheel looks different. This Swift engine has a completely flat flywheel. I'm sure my Sammy flywheel is dished?

I was chatting to you on fb earlier.

That dizzy is in the correct orientation.

Both 1.3 engines were fitted to SJs.

Wicked! Just having a read up about this one. It seems the later Samurai was fitted with a 1324 engine?

So will get it cleaned up this weekend, and chuck it in the hole! :D

What is the deal with the carb? Is it a good shout to stick with it? It's an SU carb I think. Which an automatic choke.

The carb looks odd. I would try it. It clearly rums the engine well or it wouldn't be on there.

The bigger 1324cc was fitted in the earlier SJs and Sammy's. They then swapped to the slightly smaller engine when they fitted SPI later on in the samurai sports.

I drove this in the compound yesterday, and today. It's actually a really nippy engine with great throttle response. :)

Looking forward to getting the SJ back on the road.
