1.6 road speed on 31's
To the folks running 1.6 8v, what sort of road speeds do you get? I have a 1.6 8v with a 410 transfer box and 31's, and its so painfully slow! Cruising speed is about 40mph at the moment (at a push), and with the 1.6 and 31's i would expect more than that! I have checked, then checked, then re-checked the timing, fuel/air mix, all sorts, and still cant get anything more out of her, and its really f&#cking frustrating really. I did these mods to get that extra oomph, and its just like taking a massive step backwards. Anyone got the magic cure as to whats going on?!
Also unable to rev too high, so ragging it is out the question also. I put that down to timing but it seems just fine, not sure what to do from here.

What is your timing set at?
Should easily cruise at 55-60mph

Are you still on the 410 diffs? Mine hasn't got much at the top end of the rev range.

Re: 1.6 road speed on 31's
timing was set to 8ºbtdc at a fast idle, i can floor it in 1st, 2nd, and sort of 3rd, but 4th is like cycling through shit, and there is no point in having a 5th gear at the moment lol.
Yea still on 410 diffs dan.
handbrake not sticking, no brake binding that might be slowing me down. so pretty sure its an engine thing. Its not the end of the world, as i can still get from a to b, whats frustrating is doing the engine swap for the power....then not getting any.

Re: 1.6 road speed on 31's
more advance! most of us run the 1.6 at 10* btdc, mine won't pull at 8*
the 410 diff ratios are actually better suited to 31" tyres so if anything it should pull better than those of us on samurai diffs. my old set up. 1.6, 410 tbox, 410 axles and 33" tyres would hit 80 a lot easier than I can now on the samurai diff ratios.

Admittedly my 5th gear is a little bit useless now I'm on 31s but I can still cruise at 55-60mph
Ramp up the advance a bit more... Im running my 16v at about 7* (should be at 5*) but with no vacuum advance

Re: 1.6 road speed on 31's
Is that 5* the factory spec for the 16v? The advance is ecu controlled with the Injection system and. 5* is the base setting for the ecu but it actually runs more I think? You might find you can run more than 7* before you get any pre ignition I could be wrong though.twiss wrote:Admittedly my 5th gear is a little bit useless now I'm on 31s but I can still cruise at 55-60mph

Re: 1.6 road speed on 31's
yeah it is... i tuned it by driving it and then checked it with my strobe afterwards and it seems about right
As rhinoman pointed out the combustion chamber is different... maybe due to recessed pistons in the 16v? so it doesn't need as much advance

I tuned mine by ear and smell.
There's three ways of doing things:
The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.
