Fan Question
Fan Question
Some History First.
.........................
I changed the antifreeze a week ago and since then covered some 150 miles with no problems.
Next couple of days after the A/F change the heater blows hot as it should and checking the water level for the next few days in the reservoir tank shows me at first it needed a little top up but then once level stayed on max fill line there it has stayed no problem ever since without a drop missing.
Temperature gauge always at say 3 o clock as per photo below.
I have never seen the needle rise above 3 o clock for the month i have owned the GV and i drive it each day.
Fan Question.
..................
Today i took the dog out and covered some 20 miles before getting to our destination.
Temp gauge at 3 o clock as ever but i stopped for a couple of minutes due to Horses etc and could hear a fan running ?
I looked at the temp gauge and the needle was just where the white section of the gauge meets the red section, this must of only just happened as im always looking at my dials etc.
I pulled over & popped the bonnet and a fan was running.
Now i see two fans,Green arrow is for a fan which just runs all the time & fixed to waterpump,Yellow arrow is for a fan the otherside of the main radiator and also a silver looking radiator air con ?
This is the fan that is what i could hear when i stopped for a while.
It sits directly below the bonnet catch,as per photo below.
I must also say that the heater controls has a light on which either brings fresh air into the car or recirculates the air inside the car depending which is selected, should this be lite all the time Blue arrow ?
I walked the dog, drove the 20 miles home and sat in the car with the engine running say 5 minutes outside my house.
All the way home and whilst sat outside my house the gauge was at 3 o clock as ever.
When i first drive the car each day say 11am it takes about 2 miles and the needle is at 3 o clock.
Todays temperature was 17 degrees and warm enough to have both front windows down whilst driving.
Heater control was set to cold & blower control speed was off,but middle control dial was lite as shown below.
Any advice please.

Re: Fan Question
Certainly seems odd that it didn't do it again even when you tried to do it. Maybe the thermostat stuck?
The recirc/air in from outside light you marked with a blue arrow just shows which mode its in and will stay on all the time.

Re: Fan Question
When i mentioned the needle gets to 3 o clock within say 2 miles does that seem about right or to quick ?

Re: Fan Question
Ill start with the electric fan, that is just for the a/c condenser. I very much doubt its effected by the temp of the engine. The boffins say you should have fresh air coming into the cabin as it prevents the windows misting up. Recirculation is for when you drive past a farmer spreading dung, keeps the cabin smelling better.
Is your fan of the viscous type drive? (big alloy disc covered in cooling fins) It could be that your viscous coupling is on its way out and with the slightly warmer weather its not providing enough drive to the fan.
To test: with the engine off and cold you should be able to turn the fan blades fairly easily, when the engine is hot it should be much harder to turn.
Hope this helps.

Re: Fan Question
Standard type.
Not the type which has the coil affect spring inside.
When I got home and popped the bonnet I spun the fan quite easy.

Re: Fan Question
Reading through that it sounds fine to me.
My 1600 gets up to temperature in a couple of miles.
It should have a viscous fan.
The fan will spin with the engine but at a reduced RPM until the engine gets hot.
When this happens it will pick up speed and you will be able to hear it.
The fan should come up to speed about where you say it did (top of the white band).
As said the other fan is for the air-con condenser and will come on as required when the air-con is on.

You cannot spin the fixed type fan and you should have the spring type , are you sure
